Buffing with Paste and Liquid Compounds

When a pedestal or bench buffing machine is not available solid bar compounds will not be suitable.  It would then be necessary to use a hand-held automotive style polishing machine.  Buffing with paste and/or liquid compounds will work perfectly with a polishing machine, and the same level of gloss can be achieved.

Polishing hard polyester coatings requires the use of paste compounds with its higher concentration of polishing abrasive powder as compared to liquid compounds.  However paste compounds can be used on all types of wood coating with excellent results, including polyurethane and nitrocellulose lacquer among others.

Sand the surface as described in solid bar buffing to eliminate any surface imperfections or orange peel.  Use progressively finer grits of sandpaper finishing at 600-1000 grit.  Apply a small amount of Menzerna Paste 2L on a wool buffing pad and spread it evenly around the surface of the pad.  Start the polishing machine and begin buffing with the machine running at approx 1500 r.p.m., applying moderate pressure to eliminate the sanding marks.  Then with a softer wool or foam polishing pad apply Menzerna Paste 16 fine compound and polish until you bring the surface to high gloss.

If using only liquid compounds is preferred instead of paste compounds then it is recommend to sand to a minimum of 1500 grit.  Eliminate the sanding marks with Jescar Correcting Compound and a wool buffing pad.

If necessary, a fine polishing liquid can be applied with a separate soft foam polishing pad.  We recommend the Jescar Micro Finishing Polish to remove any fine residual surface defects and to bring up the level of gloss.  After completing the buffing process clean the surface with Jescar Paint Refresh Detail Spray and a microfiber polishing cloth.  The Paint Refresh is silicone-free and will leave a smooth, slick feeling surface.
